Pennacchio to Governor: Unshackle Doctors, Give Them the Tools to Treat and Save Patients

More than 500 New Jerseyans have died from COVID-19, almost 26,000 have tested positive for the virus, yet as the numbers skyrocket every day, the Murphy Administration continues to tie the hands of doctors desperate to control the spread with hydroxychloroquine, Senator Joe Pennacchio said today.

Sen. Pennacchio said the Murphy Administration should heed the call of doctors who want to pretreat people with HCQ to control the spread of COVID-19. (CDC)

“It’s difficult to understand the motivation here,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “For whatever reason, doctors are being shackled in how they can use HCQ, and patients are suffering for it.”

Physicians Wrote to Governor Calling for Early Treatment with HCQ

An additional group of doctors has contacted a New Jersey State Senator calling on the State to lift restrictions on the use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) for the therapeutic treatment and prophylactic early treatment of COVID-19.

Sen. Pennacchio said the Murphy Administration needs to allow doctors to be doctors, remove the unnecessary shackles, and let them save lives using HCQ as a preventive treatment for the coronavirus. (Flickr)

The doctors are echoing Senator Pennacchio’s appeal for New Jersey to accumulate a stockpile of the medication.

“Major pharmacies that have a presence in New Jersey have committed to donating more than 100 million pills,” said Pennacchio. “How many has the Administration secured for us?”

Urges State to Unshackle the Doctors to Break Pandemic

New Jersey State Senator Joe Pennacchio once again questioned how the State is dictating how doctors may treat their patients.

The State can curb the spread of coronavirus if the Murphy Administration allows doctors to use hydroxychloroquine to protect patients before they get sick, Senator Pennacchio said. (©iStock)

“Instead of allowing doctors to prophylactically or immediately treat patients, New Jersey is requiring them to have a full-blown case of coronavirus before action can be taken,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “By that time, in many cases, it is too late.”

“WHRA’s proactive approach will help keep our medical personnel safe from COVID-19. To all donating and participating – thank you for your lifesaving endeavors.”

FDA Authorization Does Not Go Far Enough

Now that the FDA has given emergency authorization for the use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to fight the coronavirus crisis, Senator Joe Pennacchio said the medication may be most useful as a preventive treatment slow the spread of the disease.

A modest regimen of as few as 10 HCQ pills could protect a huge segment of our population from the coronavirus, Senator Pennacchio said. (WikiMedia Commons)

“This is good news from the FDA, but we are three weeks behind,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “Now we’ve got to get it out there as a prophylactic to protect people at high risk and the health care and first-responders we all depend on.

FDA Agrees with Senator Pennacchio on the Use of HCQ to Treat Virus

Coming off the FDA’s emergency authorization of the use of hydroxychloroquine as a therapeutic agent against the COVID-19 virus, Senator Pennacchio is calling for the preventative use of the drug to break the pandemic and release people from their isolation.

Sen. Pennachio cited a growing collection of scientific data supporting the use of hydroxychloroquine as a preventive treatment for the coronavirus. (CDC)

Pennacchio recently released a statement – endorsed by almost 70  doctors, health care providers and scientists – advocating for the use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as an “early treatment” to minimize the effects of the COVID-19 virus and reduce its communicability by decreasing viral shedding.

Statement by State Senator Joe Pennacchio

With each passing day, more and more evidence is accumulating that Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) can have a key function in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. Doctors on the front line are not only treating their patients with HCQ but are also taking HCQ (Plaquenil is the generic for HCQ) to prevent the virus from infecting them. Dr. Steve Kassapidis working tirelessly in a New York hospital, is one of them. [Fox News (1:55) (5:32)].

Sen. Pennacchio again called on Federal and State authorities to encourage HCQ’s production, storage and protocol formulation including a possible public use as a prophylactic measure against COVID-19 spread. (CDC)

Dr. Stephen Smith of the Smith Center for Infectious Diseases is treating all his patients with HCQ. No patient he treated has needed to be vented. Dr. Amesh Adalja uses HCQ only and has seen good results. Dr. Zev Zelenko claims to have treated 350 patients with zero deaths and zero hospitalizations. [Click Here]

Urges Reinstatement of Background Checks and Allowing Licensed Gun Dealers to Open for Business

Senator Joe Pennacchio today called on Governor Murphy to respect the Constitution of the United States and classify firearms retailers as “essential” so they can reopen for business during the coronavirus emergency.

In a letter to the Governor, Sen. Joe Pennacchio urged the reinstatement of the NICS system used to vet buyers by licensed firearms dealers and allow those dealers to open for business. (Government Research Archives)

“Now is not the time to make decisions based on political ideology and violate the Second Amendment rights of citizens,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “The governor should reconsider his order closing gun shops that effectively bans the sale of guns. There is too much at stake during this pandemic to trample on the rights of people who are justifiably worried about the health and safety of their families.”

Atlantic Health, Other Facilities Need Masks, Gloves, Other Protective Equipment

As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to climb, hospitals in the state are struggling to care for an ever-growing stream of patients as their stores of personal protective equipment (PPE) shrink to alarming levels.

Senator Joe Pennacchio today appealed to the medical/dental community, the business community and the public to help fill the void.

“It is very important to get protective gear for healthcare workers, especially masks and gloves, to the hospitals where they can do the most good protecting those professionals on the front line,” said Pennacchio (R-26). “Atlantic Health and other facilities across the region are being hard hit and need our help. It’s imperative to ensure doctors and nurses can remain healthy as they treat the victims of COVID-19.”

“In many rural areas that have no local police, people can wait an hour or longer for the State Police to respond to a call for help even in the best of times,” said Doherty (R-23). “What’s going to happen when more police departments, including the State Police, start experiencing real staffing issues due to the coronavirus? In an emergency, families in some of our communities might have to wait hours for a response, which is just too long. Governor Murphy should follow the lead of Governor Wolf in Pennsylvania and allow New Jersey’s gun stores to reopen. His personal dislike of firearms does not diminish the 2nd Amendment rights of New Jerseyans during this crisis.”
