Senator Diane Allen (R- Burlington/Camden) applauded emergency Senate action to repeal New Jersey’s early inmate release statute. Repeal was achieved by adoption of Governor Christie’s conditional veto of S-2308, used as an alternate to Senator Allen’s S-2814 which also repealed the statute.

“I continue to believe, as I did when I sponsored New Jersey’s No Early Release Act for violent offenders in 1997, that criminals need to serve the entirety of their sentences,” said Senator Allen. “The early release statute signed by former Governor Corzine resulted in tragedy for two families. I want to thank the Senate President for working with me to repeal this terribly misguided policy.”

Senator Allen requested during today’s Senate session to give emergency certification to the repeal measure, thereby expediting Senate passage.

Allen encouraged the Assembly to follow suit. “Early release for purportedly ‘non violent’ offenders has resulted in the release of inmates charged with murder, manslaughter, assault, and weapons violations,” Allen continued. “I urge my colleagues in the Assembly to recognize that the program is putting public safety at risk and concur with the Senate’s action as soon as is possible.”
