Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean hailed Governor-elect Christie’s selection of Bob Martin as Environmental Protection Commissioner and former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler as Education Commissioner. These Cabinet-level positions are among the most important positions in the state, and Christie has chosen well, Senator Kean said.

“With these nominations, Governor Christie again has demonstrated his deep understanding of the most important needs of our state and his willingness to wholeheartedly embrace the change we need in Trenton,” Senator Kean said.

“Environmentalists and business people agree that the Department of Environmental Protection isn’t getting the job done,” Kean said. “Bob Martin, once partner in the largest business and technology consulting company in the world, is the type of manager who can make the DEP an effective and respected guardian of the state’s environment again.

“While mayor of Jersey City, Schundler was able to push through economic reforms that led to unprecedented job growth and prosperity,” Senator Kean said. “Bret can be expected to champion reforms that will bring equally dramatic improvements in the education of the children of our state.

“Bret is one of the most vocal advocates of charter schools and school choice in the nation,” Senator Kean said. “I look forward to hearing his new ideas for improving the quality of education for every New Jersey child.”
