Republican Michael Doherty, born in Point Pleasant and raised in Glen Ridge, became the senator of the people of District 23 today at a State House ceremony attended by his family, friends and supporters. Senator Doherty, 46, pledged that he will represent his constituents with energy, character and honor.

Mike Doherty being sworn-in as the new Senator representing the 23rd legislative district in the New Jersey Senate on November 23, 2009.

“I am humbled and honored by the trust that the people of District 23 have put in me,” Senator Doherty said. “It is their interests that I will represent in Trenton, and their interests alone.”

The Senate President swore in Senator Doherty in a ceremony at 1 p.m. today in the Senate Chambers. His wife of 23 years, Linda; his parents, Raymond and Marcella Doherty of Bloomfield; and his youngest son, Jared, a Senior Airman in the United States Air Force, were at his side. Doherty will begin his Senate career as a member of both the Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Labor Committee.

On Nov. 3, voters picked Doherty to complete the four-year term of former Senator Leonard Lance, who was re-elected in 2007. Lance left the state Senate after he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008. Doherty served four terms in the New Jersey General Assembly, where he worked on the Appropriations Committee, the Labor Committee, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, and the Housing and Local Government Committee.

In 2008, he served as chairman of the Republican Assembly Task Force on Fiscal Accountability, which opposed Governor Corzine’s attempt to sell New Jersey’s toll roads to a private consortium. His No. 1 goal as senator is to win repeal of the overreaching and undemocratic law that is oppressing his constituents in the Highlands region of New Jersey.

“The legislators who passed the so-called ‘Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act’ of 2004 said it benefits the entire state, yet the bill for this costly scheme falls primarily on my constituents,” Senator Doherty said. “I will fight tirelessly for compensation for the residents of the Highlands region, and to repeal a law that transferred control over their property rights and economic well being to an unelected council that doesn’t have their interests at heart.”

Doherty, a patent attorney, is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and of Seton Hall law school. Doherty served in the U.S. Army for eight years, attaining the rank of Captain. He and Linda reside in Washington Township, Warren County. They are proud to have three sons on active duty in the U.S. military — Matthew in the Army, Ryan in the  Marine Corps, and Jared in the Air Force.
