After spending more than a decade working to secure additional funding for Freehold Borough Schools, Senator Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) celebrated the procurement of $25 million in much-needed funds, by attending yesterday’s groundbreaking for the Freehold Borough School expansion.

Jennifer Beck, Superintendent Rocco Tomazic (left) and Freehold Borough Board of Education President Dr. Michael Lichardi (right) break ground on the Freehold Borough School expansion project on Oct. 12, 2017. “I am honored to stand side-by-side with Superintendent Tomazic and local officials who we worked with to have the State commit 85 percent in funding for the construction project,” Beck said “Freehold Borough is over capacity by nearly 600 students. The additional facilities that this construction will provide are absolutely necessary in continuing to provide our children with the education they deserve.”

The construction will include additions and renovations to the Park Avenue Elementary and Freehold Intermediate School at the Park Avenue Complex. The groundbreaking marks the conclusion of a three-year process to address overcrowding in the Freehold Borough School District. Last year an administrative law judge ruled in favor of the school district and then Department of Education Commissioner David Hespe approved the State funding 85% of the project; local taxpayers would be responsible for the remainder of the costs.

“Over the years Superintendent Tomazic and I have worked closely; requesting consideration and meetings with the Department of Education Commissioner time and again. It is exceedingly rare for a legal challenge to result in the State of New Jersey paying 85 percent of the costs of a project. To attend this groundbreaking after such hard work to get the funding is an incredibly proud moment in my legislative career.” Beck concluded.
