Senator Steven Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) applauded the inclusion of a FY18 State budget appropriation to fund weed harvesting efforts at Lake Hopatcong.

Senator Oroho has for years strongly advocated alongside Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris) for increasing funding to preserve and maintain the lake.

“Lake Hopatcong is one of New Jersey’s most treasured natural resources and a key source of economic revenue,” Senator Oroho said. “The simplest way to protect the long term viability of the lake is to harvest the weeds, on time, each and every year. Unfortunately, state aid has consistently fallen short and as a result, conditions are more dire than ever.”

“My colleague, Senator Bucco and I have long advocated for securing a dedicated stream of revenue to protect and maintain Lake Hopatcong,” Senator Oroho added. “I am pleased we secured money in this year’s state budget as we continue to pursue a more permanent revenue source.”

Lake Hopatcong has become overrun run with invasive weeds – a rapidly growing problem that is threatening the health of the increasingly fragile ecosystem. Local officials and advocates have said that this year’s weed growth is the worst in recent memory and some areas of the lake are no longer navigable.

The budget resolution championed by Senators Oroho and Bucco, as included in the Fiscal Year 2018 State budget, appropriates a Grant-In-Aid to the Lake Hopatcong Commission for weed harvesting. A copy of the FY18 budget, including the resolution to provide aid to Lake Hopatcong, can be found here.
