Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris, Somerset) to reduce wait times at New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission locations is now law after it was signed by Governor Chris Christie.

Sen. Anthony Bucco’s bill changes expiration dates on driver’s licenses, shortening lines at MVC offices. (NJMVC)

“Anyone who’s been to a MVC office at the end of the month has seen first-hand exactly how bad the lines can get,” Senator Bucco said. “When everyone’s licenses expires at the end of the month, it can put a real strain on everyone involved, both customers and employees.”

The bill, S-2564, changes expiration dates on driver’s licenses to the day of an individual’s birthday, rather than the last day of the month.

The legislation was specifically written with the intent to reduce the lines and wait times at Motor Vehicle Commission offices throughout the state. Officials already encourage drivers to get their business done during off-peak, mid-month periods. However, this legislation codifies that practice in order to shorten lines for people who still might wait until the last day to renew their license.

“We can make the whole operation much more efficient with staggered expiration dates,” Senator Bucco said. “If we can do this, and get more people to take advantage of our online renewal system, we can make the experience of getting a license a little easier. I think that’s something everyone can appreciate.”
