Senator Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) is once again calling for immediate action on sick and vacation leave reform, following reports that Asbury Park taxpayers will pay $127,000 to cover the cost of a retiring Acting Police Chief’s buyback of unused leave time.

“Acting Police Chief Salerno is a dedicated law enforcement officer who committed himself to the Asbury Park community,” Beck said. “That being said, the outdated practice of sick and vacation leave payouts has left struggling property taxpayers across New Jersey with rising tax bills they can’t afford. Think of the more productive services that Asbury Park could fund with that $127,000. By enacting reform, we can address the $2 billion sick leave liability for property taxpayers statewide.”

According to the report by the Asbury Park Press, Acting Police Chief Anthony Salerno will retire with a $127,000 check for unused sick and vacation leave time, on top of a State pension. Salerno had 524 hours of vacation time and 2,155 hours of sick time remaining as of February.

“How many more massive sick and vacation leave payouts have to pile up on our shoulders before New Jersey Democrats take action? This is a problem we can fix right now,” Senator Beck added. “With more than a dozen reform bills on the table, there is no excuse for further delay.”

At least 15 different bills have been introduced by both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and General Assembly that seek to achieve vacation and sick leave reform in some fashion, including several with bipartisan support.

In a recent letter, Beck joined with Senator Mike Doherty (R-23) and Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13) to urge the Senate President and Assembly Speaker to advance any of the fifteen different bills, including Beck’s S-2947, that have been introduced by both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and General Assembly that seek to achieve vacation and sick leave reform in some fashion.
