Senator Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) helped honor the Asbury Park Blue Bishops football and boys soccer teams on the Senate floor during the voting session on Feb. 13. Superintendent Dr. Lamont Repollet, along with soccer coach Jean Dortissant, players Fenelson Etienne and Widmaier Beaubrun, football coach Tim Fosque and players Namir Argilagos and Calvin Simmons-Carter were all present to accept the Senate resolution from the Monmouth County legislative delegation.

The Asbury Park Boys Soccer Team won the NJSIAA Central Group I Sectional Title for the first time in 35 years this past fall.  Coach Jean Dortissant noted they finished the season with a record of 18-4-1; it was the soccer team’s first title since 1981.

The Asbury Park High School Football Team was also honored for winning the NJSIAA Central Group I Sectional Title this past season, their first since 2011 and the school’s seventh NJSIAA sectional title. Namir Argilagos will be attending the University of Notre Dame on a full scholarship next fall.

“I was happy to have these outstanding young student athletes and their coaches honored by the Senate today in recognition of their athletic accomplishments as well as their academic achievement — many of these students significantly improved their literacy scores during the school year.” Beck said.

Recently, Asbury Park School District has been designated the 2016-2017 Innovative District by the International Center for Leadership in Education. It was also recognized as one of the top three most rapidly improving districts in the nation. The district has partnered with Brookdale Community College and Monmouth County Vocational School District to expand its initiatives.

“Asbury Park has made great strides under the leadership of Dr. Repollet.” Beck said. “The new literacy program helped 68-percent of the students exceed reading growth targets established by the school. As noted, many of the Asbury Park student athletes have also performed above expectations in the literacy intervention program. We are seeing real, measurable progress with our students.”
