Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris) to gift a New Jersey flag to every state resident who enrolls in a federal service academy was advanced by the Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

“Some of our best and brightest young people attend the service academies and make a commitment to serve this country,” Senator Bucco said. “We couldn’t be prouder of them for their hard work and service.”

The legislation, S-1788, requires the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs to identify each New Jersey resident who enrolls in a service academy and issue them a New Jersey State Flag. Students of the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy and the United States Air Force Academy will all get a flag.

Candidates for the service academies go through a rigorous application process where they must first get nominated before their credentials and qualifications are even considered for acceptance. Once they attend an academy, the individual must commit to at least five years on active duty as a military officer.

“This measure gives them a small token of our gratitude,” Senator Bucco said. “Hopefully, having that flag will remind them of their New Jersey roots as they begin their journey in the military.”
