“There have been many theories and anecdotes discussed as to why businesses in New Jersey either shut down or leave for other, more business-friendly states,” Senator Bucco said. “But we’ve never had any hard data to back those theories up. It’s time to end the speculation and get down to the root problems that are forcing companies to shutter or move.”

The legislation, S-1207, requires the New Jersey Department of Labor to send out surveys to companies that close or leave the state in order to collect reliable data about their reasons for ending business in the state. The information will then be provided to state leaders so they can correct the problems and make New Jersey more attractive to job creators.

The survey will include questions about taxes, workforce quality and the cost of conducting business, as well as recent business interaction with government on their problems. A yearly report will be provided to the Governor and the Legislature.

“We need to move beyond the guessing games and rely on solid information in order to fully understand the problems,” Senator Bucco said. “I hope this helps us discover ways to assist struggling business, keep them in New Jersey and save jobs.
