Following the signing of legislation to fund improvements through the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust, Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R- Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex) announced a $5.2 million project to make repairs and ensure the residents of Somerset County have clean water.

“Through our legislation, we were able to streamline the process of getting this kind of important environmental project approved and financed,” Senator Bateman said. “These improvements will help keep the water in Somerset County Safe, and this project is just one of many set to begin across the state.”

The project will use NJEIT funds to make upgrades to a sludge incinerator at the Somerset Raritan Valley Sewerage Authority. The rehabilitation will bring the facility up to federal air emission guidelines and allow for the continued treatment of wastewater at the site.

A trio of bills sponsored by Senator Bateman to facilitate the financing of clean water projects in the state were signed into law by Governor Chris Christie in August.

S-2287 streamlined the NJEIT’s financing procedures to become more borrower-centric, and allows the Trust to submit a project priority list to the Legislature for approval for long-term financing twice a year rather than once a year.

S-2292 and S-2293 fund 80 eligible projects through the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust, including those in the “Storm Sandy and State Fiscal Year 2017 Clean Water Project Priority List” and the “Storm Sandy and State Fiscal Year 2017 Drinking Water Project Priority List,” as well as six clean water and two drinking water environmental infrastructure projects.
