Kyrillos: Assembly Shouldn’t Allow New Gaming Initiative to Fall Victim to Politics

Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) urged Assembly and Senate leaders to come back to the table and pass a state constitutional gaming ballot measure that’s right for the people of New Jersey, expressing dismay that we are losing the opportunity for this job and revenue-generating legislation.

“I’m very surprised that Jersey City Mayor Fulop isn’t using his considerable influence over the Assembly to motivate a compromise. This measure will be a new jobs-creating, revenue generating economic sector and remarkably may be centered in the Mayor’s hometown,” Kyrillos said.

“What’s worse is that the Assembly removed from the proposal valuable support for New Jersey’s horse racing industry, which has been hamstrung with the inability to compete with other tracks around the country,” Kyrillos said. “That destructive maneuver, if pursued by Assembly Speaker Prieto, will ensure that any potential future vote for gaming expansion will be suppressed, if not outright defeated in Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset and other counties and therefore jeopardize the overall outcome. The entire Assembly, including Republicans and Monmouth County’s two new Assembly Democrats, need to wake up and join the Senate’s initiative to help save this effort.”
