On Thursday, Senator Kean attended the groundbreaking of NJIT’s $19 million world-class life sciences and engineering facility, designed to foster revolutionary research and high quality instruction. The State covered $13.5 million of the cost to build the facility, thanks in part to Sen. Kean’s “Building Our Future Bond Act.” This voter-approved legislation provides a $750 million bond to vastly improve infrastructure and instruction at public universities, such as NJIT, over a period of 20 years.

“Today’s groundbreaking proves that the people of New Jersey made the right decision when they voted to approve a $750 million bond to fund desperately needed upgrades to higher education institutions across the State,” Senator Kean said.
Senator Kean’s “Building Our Future Bond Act” (S-2005) was signed into law in 2013, funding dozens of projects to make public universities more competitive and attractive to new students, as well as the nation’s top research scientists and engineers.
NJIT has utilized this funding to build a four-story facility housing 24,000 square feet of wet and dry laboratories by 2016. The new building will include an open lab for investigative teamwork, expanding opportunities for medical researchers to explore new discoveries. This research will focus on the following areas, placing New Jersey on the frontlines of advancements in technology and healthcare:
- Clinical healthcare
- Therapeutic interventions
- Pharmaceutical drug development
- Biosensors and medical devices
- Nanotechnologies for developing lab-on-a-chip
“The Building Our Future Bond Act kick-started a statewide effort to stimulate economic growth by creating the most powerful, innovative and competitive network of higher education institutions in the nation,” Senator Kean added. “It is essential that we continue to give public universities the tools they need to develop the very best facilities for research and instruction, so that New Jersey students can become the leaders of tomorrow.”
