Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean urged Governor Corzine to keep his promise this time and use any extra money obtained from the tax amnesty program to provide property tax relief to New Jersey’s struggling middle-class families.
“The governor has ample power to resist new calls for irresponsible spending,” Senator Kean said. “The voters of this state expect Jon Corzine to use every tool at his disposal to ensure that every penny of the tax amnesty revenue goes to the people, not to business as usual in Trenton.”
Kean noted that under the current budget, 1.7 million New Jersey residents will lose their rebates, despite promises by Governor Corzine during his first campaign to provide more property tax relief.
“In this re-election year, the governor will come under tremendous pressure to ensure rapid passage of this flawed budget,” Kean said. “The taxpayers of New Jersey expect him to stand firm for them this time.
“Rather than hail his cleverness at creating the amnesty program, the governor should be concerned that this ‘windfall’ came about solely because of the difficulties that businesses and individuals have complying with New Jersey’s punitive and byzantine tax code,” Kean said. “A code that the governor plans to make more punitive.”
“Every Republican was prepared to vote no today for a budget that relies on billions of dollars of gimmicks and one-shot revenues,” Kean said. “This is still a budget that will force our children and grandchildren to pay for the problems created by this governor today. The additional revenue must be used to reduce, in some small way, the harm this budget will cause to generations of New Jersey residents.”
