Republican Leader Senator Tom Kean said this after reading today’s media reports:
“News reports indicate that a budget agreement among the governor and majority leadership is near. Therefore, I respectfully ask the governor and legislative leaders not to rush any budget compromise through the Assembly Budget and Senate Budget and Appropriations committees.
“Once the budget is before these committees, it’s very difficult to make changes. Therefore, the public should have as many days as possible to evaluate the budget compromise before committee members begin to debate it.
“The public and members of the Legislature have yet to see the latest budget changes proposed by Democratic legislators, though these proposals supposedly have been submitted for consideration by the governor. How can the public possibly decide whether this budget is worthy of passage with so little time to evaluate these proposals?
“Republicans put forward a common-sense plan to prevent tax increases and make the state more affordable a month before the deadline for budget passage. We have put up our plan in detail on the Internet for all to see.
“Now I respectfully urge legislative Democrats to do the same by putting their proposals before the public immediately so people have a meaningful opportunity to evaluate them and comment,” Kean said. “It’s far past time for Democrats to let the sun shine in on the budget compromise they are considering behind closed doors. The public needs to know what their legislators are planning before they pass $33 billion or more in spending into law.”
