Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Senator Kevin O’Toole announced today that the preparations for redrawing New Jersey’s 40 legislative districts following the 2010 census are well under way. Senator O’Toole requested and received, May 20, 2008, a detailed memorandum from the non-partisan Office of Legislatives services that lays out the procedures and restrictions that must be followed by the four partisan offices in the redistricting process. Redistricting is a constitutional requirement that must occur every ten years.
“Kevin O’Toole is going to ensure that the mandatory redistricting following the 2010 census will be completed in a timely and fair manner,” Kean stated. “We only get one look at redrawing the districts following the census and Senator O’Toole is going to lead the effort to make sure everyone in the state is represented fairly.”
Senator O’Toole explained: “The population shifts in New Jersey make it necessary to redraw the legislative districts every ten years following the national census. It is imperative that we start now. This redistricting will determine how nearly 9 million New Jersey residents will be represented in Trenton for ten years. It must be done fairly and accurately to ensure that everyone receives the fair representation from their elected officials.”
The public should take this opportunity to share their ideas on this process by contacting the Senate Republican Office at njsenreps@njleg.org or www.senatenj.com/contact.php, or at the above number.
