New Jersey Loses More Jobs in January Than Any Other State

2007 Job Growth Estimates Adjusted Downward From 29,000 To 4,700

Senate Republican Leader Thomas Kean issued the following statement regarding the January 2008 New Jersey job growth numbers:

“Six years of crippling Democratic pro-tax and anti-business policies have brought New Jersey’s economic chickens home to roost. The figures from the New Jersey Department of Labor are staggering. Last month the state lost more than half of all the jobs lost in the country. New Jersey lost 9, 500 jobs in January 2008 while the country as whole saw employment fall by 17, 000 jobs.

“Now is not the time to raise taxes and tolls, as Governor Corzine has proposed. Instead, we must pursue an aggressive economic growth agenda to help end this downturn.

“I have introduced two bills that will promote aggressive, coordinated growth throughout the state. The first piece of legislation will place all of New Jersey’s economic development strategies under the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA). EDA will be empowered to promote far more aggressive economic development programs than this state has seen over the last six years.

“On Monday I will introduce a bill to expand train station hubs, boosting economic growth in areas where thousands of commuters already visit every day. Transit hubs will incubate growth in both the urban and suburban areas that depend on New Jersey’s rail stations. The measures will spark economic growth that will both ease the effects of the current downturn and set the stage for a future of economic expansion and prosperity.”
