Senator Tom Kean (R-21)

Kean Statement On Senate Republican Leadership Elections

Senator Thomas H. Kean, R-21, issued the following statement regarding the unanimous decision by his colleagues to serve as the next Senate Republican leader.

“I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Leonard Lance for his years of service and distinguished leadership of our caucus. He is an old friend and I look forward to working with him in leadership as the Senate Republican Budget Officer. Senator Lance has been a strong voice for fiscal restraint and responsibility. As our Budget Officer, Senator Lance will lead the fight to bring accountability and transparency to the state’s budget process.

“Too often, the people of our state feel like they’ve been forgotten by Trenton, they feel like the government isn’t responsive or worse, corrupt. They feel like Trenton either doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the challenges they face everyday to raise a family, commute to work, afford a home or build a business.

“They want a government that makes their priorities, its priorities; a government that will work as hard as they do, to live within its means; a government that will make tough decisions and sacrifices to dig itself out of the deficit; a government that will respect the rule of law and hold itself accountable.

“At a time when the citizens of this state are facing so many challenges, it’s wrong for the Governor and the government to take more of their money, to sell off our state’s valuable assets, to leave government corruption unchecked, or to continue wasteful spending that continues to drain the pockets of New Jersey families.

“The people of New Jersey want to change the direction our state is heading and Senate Republicans are prepared to lead in that effort. Our caucus understands the great challenges the people of New Jersey face everyday and over the next few months and years, we will reject the status-quo and begin to embark upon a new direction, a “Citizens’ Agenda,” which embraces accountability in government; opportunity for economic growth; and affordability for the citizens of this state.

“I am optimistic. We have a great caucus; one which brings together both the wisdom and experience of our senior members and the energy and ideas of our newest members. It is my hope, as Leader of this caucus in the upcoming session, that Governor Corzine, Senator Codey, and others in this state will join us in this endeavor and, together, we can begin to shape a better future for the people of New Jersey.”
