Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean issued the following statement today regarding the Senate Republican caucus’ continuing policy to avoid voting on any new spending. The caucus has not voted on any spending bills with either an appropriation, necessary to effectuate the legislation, or a fiscal note identifying a known impact on the state budget.
“Republican Senators remain united in their pledge to avoid voting for any new spending,” Kean stated. “There is little doubt that the state is in dire financial straights after six years of fiscal mismanagement and the Governor is exactly right, in order to fix this problem first we need to stop digging.”
Over the past month Republican Senators have either voted no or abstained on the following:
S- 607, which would cost the taxpayers $15.7 million and S-467, which would cost the taxpayers $375, 000.
“I am gratified that our colleagues on the other side of the aisle exercised fiscal discipline today and responded to our call for a moratorium on new spending. Senate President Codey took the lead today when he removed an $80, 000 appropriation from one of his own bills. Additionally, Senator Rice held a bill which would have cost New Jersey taxpayers $10 million.
“Republican Senators are standing together with the working families and the taxpayers of New Jersey in drawing a line in the sand on new spending,” Kean continued. “New Jersey doesn’t have a revenue problem it has a spending problem. Spending cannot exceed revenue; it’s just common sense.”
