Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean renewed his call today on Governor Corzine tointroduce a budget on Tuesday that does not rely on the proceeds of his road tax toll hike plan.
“Recent comments by members of the governor’s own party indicate that opposition to his plan is nearly universal. The chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee has released a gas tax /toll hike ‘lite’ alternative to the governor’s proposal. Another Democrat Senator from Cape May County called for cuts to direct property tax relief to middle class homeowners. Most recently, the Senate Majority Leader announced in print that both toll hikes for the budget and the gas tax for any purpose were dead. Under these circumstances it is incumbent upon Governor Corzine to introduce a budget that is not dependent on the proceeds of his doomed toll hike proposal.
“The governor has indicated that his toll hike scheme will allow the state to assume up to $900 million in debt service savings for the fiscal year 2009 budget. Since his plan has even been rejected by his own party, he should not assume any savings from it in the budget he presents to the state on Tuesday.
“Senate Republicans remain united in the belief that substantial and significant cuts in government spending will match recurring revenues to expenditures. Additionally, Senators Lance and Oroho constitutional amendments should be immediately considered in both houses of the legislature.”
Senator Lance’s amendment, SCR-39, would ban all borrowing without voter approval. Senator Oroho’s amendment, SCR-70, would institute a cap on the state budget.
