A More Affordable NJSenator Tom Kean (R-21)

Kean & DeCroce Meet With Corzine to Discuss Republican Budget Proposal

Open To Further Discussions With Administration

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce, along with Budget Officers Senator Leonard Lance and Assemblyman Joseph Malone, today met with Governor Jon Corzine to discuss their recently unveiled plan to eliminate $1.32 billion in unnecessary spending and using those savings to restore property tax relief and to finance transportation needs without gas tax or toll hikes.

“We had a frank conversation with Governor Corzine and we asked him to give our proposal serious consideration over the next month,” said Kean, R-Union, Morris, Somerset and Essex. “We think we’ve come up with an ambitious, practical approach that provides the foundation for a more responsible and efficient state government. We hope the Governor and legislative Democrats will give it a fair hearing.”

“While we were not encouraged that the Governor last week criticized what we believe is a common sense plan for making this state more affordable, we were happy to have an opportunity to meet with him this morning,” said DeCroce, R-Morris and Passaic. “As a result of today’s meeting, we are leaving the door open for him, and the Democrats in the Legislature, to engage in additional discussions about this plan in the coming weeks.”

Kean and DeCroce said that the proposal Republicans have put on the table is a fair plan to help reduce the cost of living in New Jersey for the state’s taxpayers without eliminating important government programs. Both men said they also look forward to the budget proposals legislative Democrats will put forward during the process.
