A bill sponsored by Senator Thomas Kean, R-21, to insure that soldiers returning from combat are able to return to the companies that previously employed them was approved by the Senate Labor Committee today.
“All of us share an obligation to do all we can for the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we enjoy,” Kean said. “Those who interrupt their lives and careers to defend our nation deserve to get their life back when they return home.”
Existing law provides that those called into active military service, during a time of war or emergency, are entitled to get their jobs back at the conclusion of their tour of duty. The law does not anticipate layoffs or reorganizations that have eliminated the position the returning soldier previously held. This measure would entitle an employee returning from the service, whose previous job had been downsized, to an equivalent job or any other position available he or she agrees to accept.
