Republican Senate Leader Tom Kean Jr. and Republican Budget Officer Leonard Lance issued the following statement after the conviction of Sharpe James by a federal jury in Newark:
“It’s a sad day for all the people of New Jersey when the former mayor of our largest city is convicted of violating the public trust for personal gain. Sharpe James was also a senator, so his conviction is a black mark as well on the reputation of a legislative body that should provide unfailingly honest and competent leadership.
“Newark’s hard-working citizens deserve nothing less than government that works only for the public good, not for the profit of corrupt politicians. So does every citizen of New Jersey.
“We hope that the verdict sways state officials who have blocked efforts to prevent the kind of corruption that has hurt the citizens of Newark and the reputation of our state.
“We urge Senate President Dick Codey to reconsider his opposition to complete ethics reform, and allow the following bills to put before the Senate for an immediate vote:”
S-769, T. Kean, Immediately bans all dual office holding
S-685, Beck, Further restricts dual office holding.
S-760, O’Toole, Establishes stricter limits on contributions to county committees of political parties and by county committees to candidates; prohibits contributions between county committees.
S-287, T. Kean, Limits contributions by certain public contractors; limits contributions by county and municipal political party committees.
S-600, Baroni, Prohibits campaign contributions by buyers of property involved in eminent domain proceedings.
