Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce today issued the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s comments related to the budget deficit the state is facing.
“Governor Corzine has yet to announce spending restraints that will even come close to the projected $1.2 billion shortfall in state revenue. The governor is in violation of an executive order he signed six months ago. His spending far exceeds recurring revenues, and a structural deficit is growing. Republicans have offered constructive spending reductions to make New Jersey affordable and government more accountable, but he continues to ignore them. He is failing to scale back a corrupt local aid program that doles out money without any written standards. For example, he has not addressed the issue of ending pay, health benefits, and pension credits for political appointees and to commission members who do little more than meet once a month. His plan also falls short in limiting excessive increases in aid to places that have been the subject of scathing audits.
“Instead of waiting to see what bailout the federal taxpayers will deliver to New Jersey, Governor Corzine should be addressing the fiscal deficit we are facing. The taxpayers deserve answers, not delays. Today’s response is indicative that the governor has the wrong priorities for a state that is screaming for accountability, affordability, and common sense.”
