Republicans Offered a Better Plan for New Jersey in June
Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce issued the following statements after reading in The Daily Journal that Cumberland County Democrats have created a Web site to generate opposition to Governor’s Corzine’s plan to charge rural communities for State Police protection for the first time in New Jersey history.
“The voters of Cumberland County can’t help but ask where the Democrats were in June. Governor Corzine’s assault on rural taxpayers could have been blocked if Democratic legislators had stood with Republicans to condemn his unfair budget then,” Kean said.
“Republicans offered a common-sense plan that would have cut bloated and unnecessary programs and used the savings to prevent cutbacks in vital services such as rural policing,” DeCroce said. “It’s no surprise that the public has reacted with anger at a cutback that could have been avoided with more even-handed and honest budgeting.”
In response to the public’s outcry, Trenton Democrats are proposing a $40 surcharge on traffic offenses to help rural communities pay the $12.5 million bill for State Police protection in addition to helping other communities pay for their own police forces.
