One of Governor Christie’s Toolkit Initiatives
A bill sponsored by Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean (Union) that would permit State colleges and universities to maintain their own workers compensation program was passed by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee today.
“Allowing a state college to administer their own workers’ compensation program, will be more convenient for workers and more cost-efficient for colleges, ” Kean stated. “Any savings may then be passed onto students in the form of lower tuition and fees.”
The bill authorizes two or more State colleges or universities to form a State college risk management group and to participate in joint liability funds, risk management programs, and related services. New Jersey’s county colleges have administered their own workers’ compensation program since 1985.
“New Jersey would no longer need to administer a college institutions’ claims, and could devote more resources to agencies with greater risk profiles, ” concluded Kean. ” Other states have successfully implemented such programs for their public colleges, while controlling costs and meeting workers’ needs.”
