Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30) that would allow two facilities that provide long-term care to individuals with Huntington’s Disease to expand to forty beds each has been approved by the Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee.
“We know that there is a long waiting list to get into some of the long-term care facilities that specialize in treating people with Huntington’s Disease,” said Singer. “Without this legislation, facilities that want to expand their programs to help more people would not be able to do so. It’s critical that we get this done.”
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is an inherited fatal brain disorder that leads to the destruction of nerve cells in certain regions of the brain. This nerve destruction causes uncontrolled movements, loss of intellectual faculties and emotional disturbance. Currently, there is no way to stop or reverse the disease.
Under the legislation, S-1735/A-387, JFK Hartwyck at Cedar Brook and Leisure Chateau Care and Rehabilitation Center in Lakewood would each be issued a specialized care facility license with 40 beds for their HD units. JFK Hartwyck current maintains 24 beds for HD patients, while the Leisure Chateau facility maintains beds for 37 HD patients.
“People with Huntington’s Disease often require specialized care that they can’t get at home, and which doesn’t require admittance to an acute care facility like a hospital,” added Singer. “Right now, however, too may people are falling through the cracks and not getting the long-term care they require. Our goal is to ensure that capable facilities are able to accept more Huntington’s patients to give them the care they need.”
