Senate Republican Conference Leader Robert W. Singer (R-30) issued the following statement on the Governor’s proposed Fiscal Year 2009 State budget:
“At long last, the Governor is finally moving to address the shameful fiscal record of the last six years. After presiding over the doubling of State debt and an $11 billion increase in government spending, the Trenton Democrats are getting the message that middle class New Jerseyans simply cannot afford their vision of tax, spend and borrow.
“It is heartening that Republican calls to make the government smaller and more efficient are now being considered in the wake of the failure of the Governor’s massive 800% toll increase scheme. I look forward to reviewing the details of the budget proposal in order to propose further spending reductions and to ensure that the priorities of the Governor are not out of step with those of the people of this State.
“Instead of blindly defending the dismal status quo of the past six years, I call my Democrat colleagues to join with us in reforming a wasteful and unaccountable State Government that is clearly broken in the eyes of New Jersey’s taxpayers.”
