Requests DOT Implement Changes to Prevent Traffic Tie-Ups
Senator Sean Kean today called for the Department of Transportation (DOT) to take action to address the massive traffic delays for motorists leaving Sandy Hook.
Kean said that he has asked the DOT to look at all possible approaches to the traffic problems that have resulted in major traffic delays in the area.
“The DOT should look at all possible remedies to alleviate the outrageous traffic problems at the Highlands Bridge,” said Kean. “Clearly, the traffic control systems currently in place are not effective and need to be amended to improve the flow of traffic.”
Kean said that he is aware that the DOT is considering implementing a number of proposals, including adjusting the timing of nearby traffic lights, revamping the exit routes from parking lots, improving communication among those directing traffic, and informing park visitors about traffic delays. He urged the DOT to implement these and other changes as quickly as possible in order to prevent future traffic jams like the ones that were experienced last weekend.
“I have asked the DOT to take immediate action to help alleviate traffic congestion at this intersection to ensure that beachgoers can exit Sandy Hook in a reasonable amount of time,” said Kean. “Since this is the only exit from the park, it is especially important during peak hours that we have a system in place to improve traffic flow in and out of the park.”
According to recent news reports, motorists exiting Sandy Hook this past weekend were forced to wait nearly three hours to exit the state park.
