Senators Sean Kean and Fred Madden, standing united with New Jersey State Police Officers and the family of murdered Trooper Philip Lamonaca, introduced a resolution urging the extradition of convicted cop killer Joanne Chesimard as a condition of the United States resuming normal diplomatic relations with Cuba.
“The State of New Jersey will not allow a convicted cop killer like Joanne Chesimard to escape justice,” Sean Kean stated. “Members of our congressional delegations must make it crystal clear to their colleagues and President Obama that negotiations with Cuba must be delayed until Joanne Chesimard is extradited.”
Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, was convicted in 1977 of the May 2, 1973 of the murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and the wounding of New Jersey State Trooper James Harper during a shoot-out on the New Jersey Turnpike. She was sentenced to life in prison. In 1979, Ms. Chesimard escaped from a maximum security cell at the Reformatory for Women in Clinton, New Jersey, and later fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum. Recent events have signaled the United States will ease economic sanctions on Cuba and travel restrictions on Cuban Americans traveling to Cuba.
“Any policy changes by the United States toward Cuba must be contingent on the return of Joanne Chesimard to the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility,” Madden concluded.
