Kean Urges DEP Commissioner to Dredge Manasquan River

Weekend Incidents Impacted Boaters Near Glimmer Glass Bridge

Senator Sean Kean is calling on the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to take immediate action to address shoaling on the Manasquan River that has become dangerous to boaters.

Kean has sent a letter to the DEP Commissioner Lisa Jackson requesting that she address the dangerous situation on the Manasquan River.

In the letter Kean explained that silt and sand have accumulated on a 50 yard stretch of water located within the marked channel. This area is located east of the Brielle railroad bridge where the channel heads off to the right on the approach to the Glimmer Glass Bridge.

“The state must take immediate action to alleviate the shoaling problem in this area of the Manasquan River,” said Kean. “Failure to address this situation could result in serious accidents.”

According to local boaters, this area was the root of many problems over the weekend of July 12th and 13th as many boats had difficulty navigating through this location.

“This area of the river generates heavy boat traffic during the summer season,” said Kean.

Kean also stated in his letter to Jackson, “This issue presents a public safety hazard that I would urge the Department of Environmental Protection to address. For this reason, the Manasquan River must be dredged as soon as possible to allow boats to safely navigate this area.”
