Senator Sean Kean (R-11) is troubled that New Jersey will be paying $2 billion for a new Trans-Hudson river rail line, while New York will have to pay nothing.
“I don’t understand why New Jersey would pay $2 billion and New York pay nothing for a project that is equally advantageous for both states,” stated Kean. “Both states will benefit and therefore both states should be responsible for funding it.”
Last week during an Assembly Transportation Committee meeting, the Executive Director of NJ Transit testified that the Port Authority has committed $3 billion for the project, the Federal Government would pay between $2 and $3 billion, and New Jersey would chip in an additional $1.5 to $2 billion, while New York would pay nothing.
“Construction on this tunnel is scheduled to begin next year,” concluded Kean. “While I strongly support the construction of the tunnel and believe it will greatly benefit our region, we need to know why New Jersey is footing such a hefty portion of the bill, while New York sits back and reaps the rewards.”
Current cost projections for completion of the tunnel are $7.2 billion.
