Measure Would Ensure Recreational Anglers Have Access to NJ Reefs
The Senate today approved a measure that would ban commercial fishing on New Jersey’s artificial reefs.
Kean said recreational fisherman have been denied access to New Jersey’s artificial reefs by the maze of commercial fishing gear which currently litters the reefs and ensnares propellers and fishing lines.
“The proliferation of commercial gear has made it nearly impossible for recreational anglers to fish New Jersey’s artificial reefs,” said Kean. “Passage of this bill brings us one step closer to taking back our reefs for recreational fishermen.”
The legislation, S-336, would prohibit any fishing gear other than rod-and-reel, hand line, spear, or recreational gig from being used within 100 feet of an artificial reef. New Jersey has a network of 15 artificial reefs created along the state’s coastline to attract fish and other marine life to that area.
“Recreational fishermen helped pay for the establishment of New Jersey’s reefs and should not be denied access to the reefs by commercial fishermen,” said Kean. “We must take action to protect the rights of recreational fishermen to fish at these prime locations.”
The measure was approved by a vote of 32-4 and now heads to the General Assembly. An identical Assembly version has been sponsored by Assembly members Dave Rible and Mary Pat Angelini.
Kean had previously sponsored the bill in the Assembly where it died on the last day of the 2006-2007 session despite efforts by Senator Kean to make an emergency motion to hear the bill.
