Legislation sponsored by Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris) that would create a user friendly, easy to navigate web site that would allow taxpayers to see how their money is being spent, passed the Senate today.
“I am very grateful for the support of Governor Christie, Senate President Sweeney, Senator Tom Kean and Senator Codey,” Pennacchio stated. “I am hopeful that the General Assembly acts quickly on this measure so that it can be signed into law before the summer recess.”
The “Transparency in Government Act” was introduced in January of 2008. The bill would create a simple, searchable web site that taxpayers can use to track state spending. The bill would require county, municipal and state officials to work with the Treasurer to link local transparency web sites to the main state transparency web site.
“A number of states already authorize taxpayers to track their tax dollars online,” Pennacchio continued. “This affordable, common-sense program will provide information in a user-friendly format that can be accessed from homes, libraries and businesses. It is long past time that we listen to taxpayers who are demanding that Trenton be accountable.”
