Pennacchio: State Auditor Analysis Shows that Federal Stimulus Money Lacks Oversight

Calls Again on Corzine to Adopt Transparency in Government Act

Senator Joe Pennacchio, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, commented today on published reports that “there exists transparency or accountability risks in the financial reporting or processing of transactions.”

“A report by the Office of the State Auditor demonstrates that the oversight controls over federal stimulus funds instituted by the Corzine Administration are ineffective. As I have stated repeatedly in the past, ‘Governor Corzine’s federal stimulus Web site is very attractive, but almost useless to busy taxpayers. Messages remind us that taxpayers have every right to know on a timely basis how their stimulus money is being spent.’

“Governor Corzine has stated time and again that he will provide a mechanism that the regular Joe in the street can use to following the government’s expenditures of these vast sums of monies. Yet the fact remains that the web site set up by the governor’s chief of staff and the state comptroller is largely unusable.

“Following today’s revelations in the media Governor Corzine’s appointed overseers of the stimulus funds once again pledged to work closely with the State Auditors Office ‘in accessing risk and ensuring adequate audit coverage of recovery act dollars in New Jersey.’

The common-sense solution to this problem would be to immediately adopt the provisions of The Transparency in Government Act. The governor could accomplish this goal with the stroke of the pen by Executive Order. The governor endorsed the ‘Transparency in Government Act’ in his State of the State speech, yet to date he has failed to act.

“New Jersey must act now to ensure the federal stimulus dollars are put to the best possible use. Governor Corzine must adopt ‘The Transparency in Government Act.’”
