Senator Joe Pennacchio, (R-26), issued the following statement regarding the condition of New Jersey’s budget. Some estimates put the structural deficit for the Fiscal Year 2009 budget at $3.5 billion.
“For far too long the state has been borrowing and spending beyond its means. We should begin cutting the size of state government now, in order to restore fiscal sanity to state government. We should not wait until July to begin cutting the state budget
Here are two way that governor Corzine can put his (our) money where his mouth is: The Governor’s toll road scheme has already cost the taxpayers more than $7 million. In order to save New Jersey’s taxpayers more than $500 per hour, the Governor should immediately terminate the contract with the law firm of Skadden, Arps Meagher and Flomm.
“Additionally, the current budget has a $153 million set aside as distressed city aid. These funds have not yet been disbursed, they should be returned to the general fund.
“These two cuts alone will save the taxpayers nearly $160 million. If these cuts are extended into the next budget it will save twice as much. The Governor should take immediate action and make these two rather simple cuts. I await his reply.”
