Senator Joseph Pennacchio, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee said this after hearing State Treasurer David Rousseau testify that the Corzine administration has “finally brought property taxes under control.”
“It’s now clear why Governor Corzine thinks that he can raise taxes to record levels during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression,” Senator Pennacchio said. “He and members of his administration have deluded themselves into believing they’ve done such a great job of reducing property taxes, homeowners now can afford big increases in other types of taxes.
“Hello Mr. Treasurer! New Jersey residents know that they pay the highest property taxes in the nation. Many of them will once again see huge increases in these tax bills this year, even as the recession eats away at their income and job security. They also know that Governor Corzine has virtually ignored his campaign promise to provide comprehensive property tax relief.
“New Jersey can not face the looming crisis unless we demand that unelected public officials such the treasurer provide us with factual information, not campaign spin for the governor. We needed to hear from treasurer how he plans to deal with an ever-growing shortfall in tax revenues. It would have been good to hear his views on how to deal with a New Jersey economy that has generated far more unemployment than any of our neighboring states. We did not need to hear a list of so-called accomplishments that just emphasized how much this governor has promised but failed to deliver.”
