Senator Kevin O’Toole (R-Bergen County) wants Ticketmaster’s CEO, Irving Azoff, to testify before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and explain last week’s incident where Bruce Springsteen fans were unable to log on to Ticketmaster and were instead immediately redirected to Ticketmaster’s resale site, TicketsNow, where tickets were being sold for four times the price on Ticketmaster’s main site.
“If this was an intentional scheme to get music fans to pay more for tickets, the folks who came up with it aren’t much different from Bernie Madoff and his Ponzi scheme or Ken Lay and his hyping of Enron stock,” O’Toole stated. “All three cases would involve a trusted person or company who abused that trust to take money from others in unethical ways. It is absolutely unacceptable, and someone needs to be held accountable for taking advantage of music fans. Congressman Pascrell was right to ask the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to investigate Ticketmaster and its ticket sale practices in this case and others.”
Ticketmaster has since issued a public apology and has promised to give refunds to buyers of the marked-up tickets.
“An apology is nice, but I want to know if this was an orchestrated effort to deceive fans in order to generate bigger profits, ” O’Toole continued. “We need to get to the bottom of how this transpired so we can ensure it never happens again. Bringing in the CEO of Ticketmaster to testify on the record is a good first step in that direction.”
