Healthcare Blueprint Must Be Implemented Before More Closures
Senator Kevin O’Toole (R-40) issued the following statement regarding Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard’s testimony today before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. The commissioner testified that there is no State plan to ensure the fiscal health of hospitals in New Jersey today or in the future.
“The governor is cutting $143 million in Charity Care payments, and we need to know if those cuts reflect the level of charity care provided.
“The scenario concerning the fiscal health of hospitals in New Jersey that Commissioner Howard laid out today is frightening. It is vitally important that we have a master plan in place to ensure that there are no gaps in this State’s health care delivery system.
“It was my understanding that the Governor created The Commission on Rationalizing Health Care Resources to develop state policy to support essential hospitals throughout the state. I am disappointed that the Commission never fully satisfied the Governor’s directive.
“I urge the Governor and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to immediately begin working to create a master plan. We cannot afford to wait until the last hospital closes in New Jersey to begin reforming our health care delivery system.”
