Senator Kevin O’Toole, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding potential savings that the Division of Pension and Benefits should be exploiting. The Senator is asking that the Chair of the committee recall Fred Beaver the director of the Division of Pension and Benefits, to explain why many of the reforms suggested during the special summer session two years ago have not been implemented. These reforms could result in significant savings for the taxpayer.
“Two years ago, Governor Corzine called a special session to develop specific reforms to help reduce the cost of government. After months of hearing and hours of testimony the four committees delivered dozens of proposals. The Joint Legislative Committee on Public Employee Benefits Reform, of which I was a member, delivered more than 40 proposals.
“Many of the suggested proposals have not been adopted by the Division of Pensions and Benefits. This is disturbing, especially in this budget climate. It is important that the Chairwoman Buono recall the director of the Division of Pensions and Benefits to explain to us what obstacles he is facing. Working together, we can help overcome any obstacles and adopt the reforms as soon as possible.”
