Senator Kevin O’Toole, R-Bergen, Passaic and Essex, praised Governor-Elect Chris Christie for his sensitive, intelligent and non-partisan decision to let Jennifer Velez continue her outstanding service to the people of New Jersey as Commissioner of the Department of Human Services.
“Governor Christie has demonstrated again that his administration, first and last, will be about competence and dedication to public service,” O’Toole said. “Jennifer Velez has served both Republican and Democrat administrations with unsurpassed passion and ability. She is the best choice to head the biggest agency in state government, and I applaud Governor-elect Christie for recognizing this fact.”
O’Toole pointed out that the Human Services has the biggest budget in state government, and oversees the activities of 16, 000 state employees.
“Most Human Services workers work anonymously and selflessly serving the most vulnerable people in our society – including the mentally ill, the homeless and the developmentally disabled,” O’Toole said. “There are no more important tasks performed by government, and we are lucky to have Jennifer Velez to oversee these crucial programs and the very special people who do this good work.”
O’Toole also praised Christie for appointing highly accomplished women to handle some of most important tasks facing the state. In addition to Velez, Christie has appointed Paula Dow as attorney general, and has assigned Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno the crucial task of overseeing state economic redevelopment efforts.
“Clearly, Governor Christie is out to find the best people regardless of gender or race,” O’Toole said. “State government will improve because of it.”
