O’Toole: New Jersey Needs a Higher Education Summit

Republican Whip Kevin O’Toole (R-40) made this statement after hearing testimony at a hearing of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee about the erosion in funding for state college and universities:

“An educated workforce is vital to our economy. New Jersey’s fortunes will decline if we can’t supply enough skilled professionals to attract and keep technology and pharmaceutical companies in the state.

“Soaring tuition and inadequate resources for higher education prevent our young people from going to college in New Jersey, forcing many of them to leave, never to return, to get an education. The result is forced separation of families, and an eroding of the work force we need to expand New Jersey’s economy.

“I urge the governor to call a Higher Education Summit that would include college and university officials, business leaders and legislators to discuss ways to provide a dedicated, uninterrupted stream of funding to our institutions of higher education.

“The hard-working families of our state need to know that we will find ways to prevent the 10% tuition increases of past years. Businesses need to know we will provide the talent they need to compete and thrive in the world economy. A summit would generate solutions to problems in New Jersey’s institutions of higher education that have been ignored for too long.”
