O’Toole: Governor’s Budget Doesn’t Go Far Enough

Senator Kevin O’Toole, R-40, made this statement after Governor Corzine signed the fiscal 2009 budget:

“This budget is an improvement over the other Democratic budgets of the last six years, but that is faint praise considering that past budgets increased spending by 50 percent, raised more than 100 taxes and left this state with a massive debt that will burden our children and our children’s children.

“Contrary to what the governor said, this budget spends more than last year. According to press accounts, more than $940 million has been moved off budget. The citizens of New Jersey should know they will pay more for government next year, whether it’s on the budget or off.

“This spending plan will result in higher property taxes, delay serious debt reduction, and practically guarantee that every driver in this state soon will be pay higher gas taxes, fees or tolls.

“Moreover, in order to get members of his own party to vote for the budget, the governor had to push through a bill that will increase state debt by a whopping $3.9 billion. Passage of this budget should have not have been predicated on approval of billions of dollars in borrowing without voter approval. It will rank as one of the biggest Christmas tree packages in state history, and it will add hundreds of millions of dollars to tax bills.

“This budget should have both cut wasteful spending and prevented property tax increases by cutting bloated programs and using the money to restore municipal aid.

“Republicans offered a plan that found $1.32 billion in savings to do everything good that the governor’s spending plan does and a lot more. I urge the governor to review this common sense plan as he considers what to do about funding transportation needs. There is still time to avoid new taxes and tolls.”
