Nearly 600 Complaints Received Since the New Year
Senator Kevin J. O’Toole, (R-40), called today on Gregory Paw, the Director of the Division of Criminal Justice in the Department of Law and Public Safety, to open a criminal investigation into Celebration Studios Inc. Celebration Studios based in Chester, Morris County, New Jersey contracted with customers to provide photography and videography services for weddings. Celebration Studios closed at the beginning of this month.
“I applaud Attorney General Milgram’s action in taking the step of filing a civil action against Celebration Studios and its principal owner Marc Swartz, ” O’Toole stated. “I believe, however, that this studio’s behavior could be viewed, possibly, in a criminal context and I urge Greg Paw the Director of the Division of Criminal Justice to open a parallel criminal investigation into this studio.”
Celebration Studios is charged by the Division of Consumer Affairs with accepting payments for services and then failing to provide the contracted for services. Additionally, the studio is charged with accepting payments for weddings that would occur throughout 2008 and then abruptly closing. Celebration is also accused of misleading consumers concerning their imminent closing and charging consumer’s credit cards without their knowledge.
“Nearly 600 consumers throughout New Jersey appear to have been defrauded by this photography studio. The studio’s conduct very well may rise to the level of theft by deception and the Director of the Division of Criminal Justice should ensure that anyone who has committed a criminal act be held accountable, ” O’Toole concluded.
