Senator Kevin O’Toole, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, called on Governor Jon Corzine to appoint a special EnCap monitor charged with safeguarding any remaining taxpayer money, providing a full accounting of how and why this project wasted so much taxpayer money, and making sure the cleanup of the polluted landfill sites is finally completed after years of delays.
“State officials under three Democrat governors failed in their constitutional responsibility to ensure that these landfill sites were cleaned up and that taxpayer money wasn’t wasted. Instead, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are gone, and the site is still polluted. It’s far from clear that any of the lost money will ever be recovered.
“In addition to the outrageous and embarrassing facts published by the Record of Bergen County, reports continue to circulate that state officials had meetings with unscrupulous characters who someone how got themselves roles in how the EnCap project was administered. It’s time for a full report on who was involved and why. The public has a right to know.
“After the monitor is appointed, the governor should call an immediate meeting of call Bergen County legislators, representatives of the attorney general’s office and officials from the Department of Community Affairs. They should be required to say in public how they plan to safeguard the $80 million that is still at risk because of this scandal, recover ill-gotten gains from EnCap and others, and get the EnCap site cleaned up as it should have been years ago.
“It’s been said that sunshine is the best disinfectant. Governor Corzine has to shed light on the EnCap scandal. The mess will not be cleaned up until an independent investigator is put in charge of making sure the truth comes out and that the state does much better in the future.”
