Says Volunteers Offset Need for Paid Personnel, Lowering Costs for Property Taxpayers

A joint resolution sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho (R-24) that seeks to protect property taxpayers by reversing a trend of fewer people joining volunteer fire departments and first aid and rescue squads has been approved by the governor.

The governor has approved Sen. Oroho’s joint resolution focused on retaining and recruitment of volunteer first responders to keep property taxes from rising. (SenateNJ.com)

“There is growing concern across the state that volunteer first responder organizations are unable to retain and recruit new members,” said Sen. Oroho. “When fewer people volunteer, towns are forced to hire paid personnel at property taxpayer expense. It’s critical that we identify ways to maintain critical public safety services in our communities without increasing costs to taxpayers.”

The resolution, SJR-23, establishes a “Special Task Force on Volunteer Retention and Recruitment” to study and recommend strategizes, incentives, and policies for the retention and recruitment of the State’s volunteer first responders.

The measure, S-2389, dedicates $500,000 annually to the “Lake Hopatcong Fund” for the protection, preservation, restoration, maintenance, management, and enhancement of New Jersey’s largest state-run lake. The funds will come from license fees required to operate power boats on nontidal waters.

“By establishing this preservation fund and securing long-term funding, Lake Hopatcong will finally receive the protection and conservation it needs,” said Bucco (R-Morris, Somerset.) “Now that the bill has been signed, the ‘Lake Hopatcong Fund’ will provide stability for the local families and small businesses that surround the lake.”
