The General Assembly last week passed a resolution calling for the immediate return of Sean Goldman from Brazil to the United States, and to the custody of his father, David Goldman, a resident of Tinton Falls and the 12th Legislative District.
Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande sponsored this resolution that was passed unanimously, with the exception of two abstentions, yesterday.
The State Senate passed a ceremonial resolution also calling for Sean’s return to the United States in March. Senator Jennifer Beck was a co-sponsor of that resolution.
Sean Goldman, then age 4, was taken to Brazil in 2004 by his mother and without the permission of his father, which, according to United States law, constitutes as kidnapping. From the time Sean was taken to Brazil, David Goldman has been working tirelessly to bring his son, who just celebrated his 9th birthday, back home to Tinton Falls, New Jersey. In 2008, Sean’s mother died in child birth, and David Goldman assumed that as Sean’s biological father, he would be given custody of his son. To this day, Sean is being kept illegally in Brazil by his step-father.
“David Goldman has been working so hard just to do what he knows is right,” said Casagrande. “A son being reunited with his loving father is the right thing. Congressman Chris Smith has been doing all he can to bring Sean home. We too, as elected representatives of the 12th Legislative District, have a duty to stand in David Goldman’s corner and given whatever support we can to his cause.”
Recently, a Brazilian judge ruled that Sean should be returned home to his father; however, that action is currently blocked by an appeal filed by Sean’s step-father.
“Finally,” said O’Scanlon, “the Brazilian government seems to be doing the right thing. We have to keep up the pressure, though, to ensure Sean’s safe and immediate return home to New Jersey. It’s time this matter was resolved and this family is reunited. We all hope to see Sean celebrating his 10th birthday at home with his father.”
“It was wrong for Sean’s mother to take him from his father,” said Beck, “and it is wrong for Sean’s return to be blocked in anyway. We implore the Brazilian government to make this reunion happen, and for Sean’s step-father to allow him to return home.”
