Oroho, McHose and Chiusano: No Tolls on 78 & 80

Senator Steve Oroho, Assemblywoman Alison McHose and Assemblyman Gary Chiusano (R-24) issued the following statement regarding Assemblyman Joseph Cryan’s remarks that the state should consider tolling routes 78 and 80 to pay for the new trans-Hudson tunnel.

“The new trans-Hudson tunnel is not a magical passage that will relieve commuters from congestion on Routes 78 and 80. The new tunnel will be used by commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor lines, not cars.

“Asking New Jersey drivers to pay for a rail tunnel they may never use is just plain wrong. This new toll plan is as bad, if not worse, than Governor Corzine’s original toll hike debt plan.

“What’s worse is that the tunnel will be paid for almost entirely with money collected in New Jersey. New Yorkers will benefit from the tunnel, and should be pay their fair share toward its cost.

“Governor Corzine should show the same enthusiasm in protecting New Jersey families from his own party’s money-grabbing schemes as he did in safeguarding them from Mayor Bloomberg’s failed congestion pricing plan.

The governor must answer: Why should New Jersey have to pony up $1.5 billion for the new tunnel when the State of New York doesn’t have to pay a dime? Perhaps that is the question that the chief spokesman for the New Jersey Democratic Party should be asking, not how to soak New Jersey commuters.”
