Senator Steve Oroho, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, called on the Corzine Administration to eliminate or at least reduce the expansion of the preschool education program he signed into law last year.
“This is a common-sense savings that could save property taxpayers up to $77 million, this year alone,” Oroho stated. “By now, even the governor must be aware of the financial burden that the middle class is suffering from.”
In January 2008, Corzine signed into law the “School Funding Reform Act of 2008,” which provided a new school funding formula for the state’s 616 school districts. It included a provision to eventually expand preschool education programs in every district throughout the state. According to media reports, Corzine has earmarked $77 million for the program in his current budget proposal. It is estimated the program may eventually cost the state $300 million.
“This unaffordable initiative is nothing more than state funded daycare,” Oroho continued. “If Governor Corzine were truly on the side of the middle class in this state he would immediately defer this program.”
Senator Oroho is the prime sponsor of legislation, S-2466, that would eliminate expansion of the preschool education program in “School Funding Reform Act of 2008.” The legislation was introduced in January and was referenced to the Senate Education Committee.
